In a faraway land, a long time ago, Kong-ji, a good and beautiful daughter, took care of her widowed father.  “It is our custom that you will one day marry; and that is a good thing. Therefore, I have decided to look for another wife.”

He found a woman who had an ugly daughter named Pat-ji and they married. The two girls became stepsisters. Pat-ji treated Kong-ji like a servant, and her mother encouraged her. Kong-ji did all the housework while Pat-ji and her mother spent their days eating, shopping, and making Kong-ji serve them.

One day, an announcement was made. The village was going to have a big celebration. Everyone was invited. Kong-ji asked if she could attend.
Her stepmother smiled cruelly and said,  “Of course, but only after you finish all the work I give you.”

She poured out a huge pile of rice from a bag and told Kong-ji to remove all the husks from the rice. After her stepmother and Pat-ji left, Kong-ji looked helplessly at the pile of rice. She would never finish removing all the husks. Then a flock of sparrows flew to earth, landed on the rice, and began pecking at it, taking the husks off each grain of rice! The birds worked very quickly.

Soon all the rice was clean. An angel flew down to visit her. “Take this dress.” said the angel, handing Kong-ji a fancy dress to wear. Then the angel gave her a pair of silk shoes to wear. Kong-ji dressed, ran out the door, and hurried toward the village.

A handsome man came toward Kong-ji on the bridge, and she ran back the way she had come. But one of her silk shoes fell off and the man picked it up. To find Kong-ji, this man asked every young girl in the village to try on the shoe. When he found Kong-ji and the shoe fit, he asked her to marry him.  Pat-ji was extremely envious of Kong-ji.

After a time, Pat-ji decided to kill Kong-ji so she could marry her rich husband. So she went to see her stepsister, and while they were walking together by a pond, Pat-ji pushed Kong-ji into the water. But Kong-ji's husband heard the splash, ran to the pond, and saved his wife.

Kong-ji’s husband wanted to throw Pat-ji in prison but Kong-ji pleaded with him and he agreed not to send Pat-ji to prison. Kong-ji’s kindness changed Pat-ji and her mother, who were grateful to Kong-ji, and they all lived happily ever after.

<콩쥐팥쥐>

옛날 아주 먼 나라에 착하고 예쁜 딸 콩쥐가 홀아비(아내를 잃고 혼자 지내는 사내)가 된 아빠를 뒷바라지하고 있었습니다. “언젠간 네가 결혼하게 될 것이고 그렇게 하는 게 좋단다. 그게 우리의 풍습이지. 그래서 아빠는 또 다른 아내를 찾아보기로 결심했단다.”

아빠는 팥쥐란 이름의 못생긴 딸 하나를 데리고 있는 여자를 만나 결혼했습니다. 두 소녀는 이복자매가 됐죠. 팥쥐는 콩쥐를 하인처럼 다뤘고 새엄마도 그렇게 하도록 부추겼습니다. 팥쥐와 새엄마는 먹거나 물건을 사러 다녔고 콩쥐를 시중 들게 하면서 시간을 보냈습니다. 집안일은 모조리 콩쥐의 차지였습니다. 

어느날, 마을에서 큰 축제가 열린다는 소식이 알려졌습니다. 모든 사람들이 초대됐습니다. 콩쥐는 새엄마에게 자기도 참석할 수 있는지 물었습니다. 새엄마는 차갑게 웃으며 말했어요. “물론이지, 그렇지만 내가 시킨 모든 일을 다 끝낸 다음에만 갈 수 있어.”

그녀는 자루에서 쌀을 산더미같이 쏟아놓은 후 콩쥐에게 쌀겨를 모두 벗겨놓으라고 했습니다. 계모와 팥쥐가 떠난 후 콩쥐는 쌀 더미를 힘없이 쳐다봤습니다. 그 많은 쌀겨를 모두 벗기는 일은 절대로 끝나지 않을 것 같았습니다. 그때 참새 한 떼가 날아와 쌀 위에 내려앉아 낟알을 쪼아대기 시작했습니다. 쌀겨는 조금씩 벗겨져나갔습니다. 새들의 몸놀림은 아주 빨랐습니다.

쌀은 금세 깨끗이 벗겨졌어요. 이번엔 천사가 그녀를 만나러 내려왔습니다. “이 옷을 받으세요.” 천사가 콩쥐에게 건넨 건 화려한 드레스였습니다. 천사는 그녀에게 비단 구두 한 켤레도 줬습니다. 콩쥐는 옷을 입고 문으로 달려나가 황급히 마을로 향했습니다.

다리 위에서 잘생긴 남자가 콩쥐에게 다가왔습니다. 놀란 콩쥐는 온 길을 되돌아 달려갔습니다. 하지만 그녀의 비단 구두 한 짝이 벗겨지고 말았어요. 남자는 그걸 집어들었죠. 그는 콩쥐를 찾으려고 마을의 모든 처녀에게 구두를 신어보게 했습니다. 드디어 남자는 콩쥐를 찾아내 비단 구두를 신겼고, 구두가 발에 꼭 맞자 그녀에게 청혼했습니다. 그걸 본 팥쥐는 콩쥐를 매우 시기했습니다.

팥쥐는 콩쥐를 죽이기로 결심했습니다. 그러면 콩쥐의 부자 남편과 자기가 결혼할 수 있으리라 생각했죠. 팥쥐는 콩쥐를 만나 함께 연못가를 걷던 중 콩쥐를 물속으로 밀어넣었습니다. 그러나 콩쥐 남편이 물에 빠지는 소리를 듣고 연못으로 달려와 아내를 구했습니다.

콩쥐 남편은 팥쥐를 감옥에 넣기를 원했습니다. 하지만 콩쥐가 그에게 간청해 팥쥐는 감옥에 보내지지 않았습니다. 콩쥐의 착한 마음은 팥쥐와 계모를 변화시켰고 그들은 콩쥐에게 고마워했습니다. 그래서 그들은 이후 모두 행복하게 살았습니다.
