A hare was dozing off on a warm spring day. Just as he was about to drift off to sleep, he heard a terrifying roar right in front of him. The hare jumped to his feet and found a ferocious tiger was towering over him.

“Well, I’m so very glad to meet you, Mr. Hare, because I’m starving,” said the tiger. “Mr. Tiger, I’d taste awful,” the hare said in trembling voice. The tiger just blinked his eyes because he couldn’t believe what he just heard.

“If you’re hungry right now, why don’t you eat some delicious stone cakes?”

“Stone cakes? Where are they?” asked the tiger greedily.

The hare gathered eleven small stones and put them down in front of the tiger.

“These don’t look edible to me,” the tiger said suspiciously. “They just look like rocks.”

“Do you think I would dare to lie to you, the king of the forest?” said the hare in his most innocent and flattering voice. “Trust me, these are the most delicious cakes you’ll ever eat. Now, just sit down and rest, and I’ll roast the stone cakes for you.”

Before the tiger could say a word, the hare began gathering dry twigs to start a fire. As soon as the fire was going strong, he put the eleven stones into the fire.

“How soon will the stone cakes be ready?” asked the tiger drooling.

“When they start turning bright red, they’re ready to eat,” the hare answered.
“They’re especially delicious with syrup.”

“But we don’t have any syrup,” said the tiger.

“Just watch the ten stone cakes and I’ll run to the village to fetch some syrup,” the hare said as he started walking down the road.

The tiger sat by the fire and watched the stones cook. His stomach was growling, but he didn’t want to lose face to the small hare so he just counted the stone cakes.

Then the tiger noticed something. “The hare said there were ten stone cakes, but I count eleven,” said the tiger with a smile. “That means I can eat one now and the hare will never know it.”

The tiger had no time to lose and plopped one of the glowing rocks into his mouth, swallowing it in a moment.

“Yeoooow,” screamed the tiger, in pain.

From his hiding place down the road, the hare saw the tiger running in the direction toward the river. The sight of the tiger running with smoke coming out of his mouth was so funny that the hare fell down on the ground and laughed until his sides ached. 

<돌떡>

어느 따뜻한 봄날에 토끼가 꾸벅꾸벅 졸고 있었습니다. 바로 잠에 빠져들려고 할 때, 토끼의 바로 앞에서 으르렁거리는 무서운 소리가 들렸습니다. 토끼는 벌떡 일어나 사나운 호랑이가 앞에 높이 버티고 서 있는 것을 보았습니다.

“자, 토끼 양반, 자네를 만나서 무척 기쁘네. 나는 배가 고파 굶어 죽을 지경이거든.” 호랑이가 말했습니다. “호랑이님, 나는 정말 지독하게 맛이 없어요,” 토끼가 떨리는 목소리로 말했습니다. 호랑이는 금방 들은 말을 믿을 수가 없어 그냥 눈만 껌벅거렸습니다.

“지금 그렇게 배가 고프시다면 맛있는 돌떡 좀 드시겠어요?” “돌떡이라고? 그게 어디 있는데?” 호랑이가 게걸스럽게 물었습니다. 토끼는 작은 돌 열한 개를 주워 호랑이 앞에 내려놓았습니다.

“이것들은 내가 먹을 수 있는 것 같지 않은데.” 호랑이가 미심쩍은 듯이 말했습니다. “이건 그냥 돌 같아 보인단 말이야.” “아니, 밀림의 왕이신 호랑이님께 제가 감히 거짓말을 한다고 생각하십니까?” 토끼는 한껏 순진하고 아첨하는 목소리로 말했습니다. “절 믿어보세요, 이건 호랑이님께서 앞으로도 먹어보지 못할 가장 맛있는 떡입니다. 이제 앉아서 쉬고 계세요. 그러면 제가 호랑이님을 위해서 돌떡을 구워 드릴게요.”

호랑이가 한마디 말도 하기 전에 토끼는 마른 잔가지들을 모아서 불을 피우기 시작했습니다. 불이 세지자마자 토끼는 열한 개의 돌을 불에 넣었습니다.

“돌떡이 언제 되겠느냐?” 호랑이가 군침을 흘리며 물었습니다. “돌들이 빨갛게 변하기 시작하면 먹을 수 있어요,” 하고 토끼가 대답했습니다. “이것은 꿀을 찍어 먹으면 훨씬 맛이 있어요.” “그런데 우린 꿀이 없지 않으냐,” 하고 호랑이가 말했습니다. “돌떡 열 개를 그냥 지켜보기만 하세요, 그러면 제가 마을에 뛰어가서 꿀을 좀 갖고 올게요.” 토끼는 길을 걸어 내려갈 준비를 하며 말했습니다.

호랑이는 불 옆에 앉아서 돌이 구워지는 걸 바라봤습니다. 호랑이의 배가 꾸르륵거렸습니다. 그러나 호랑이는 작은 토끼 앞에서 체면을 잃고 싶지 않아 그냥 돌떡을 세었습니다. 그런 다음, 호랑이는 뭔가 다르다는 걸 알아차렸습니다.

“토끼가 돌떡이 열 개 있다고 했는데 내가 센 건 열한 개잖아.” 호랑이가 미소를 지으며 말했습니다. “그럼 내가 하나 먹을 수 있다는 거네. 토끼는 절대로 알 리가 없어.”

호랑이는 기다릴 것도 없이 급히 뜨겁게 달궈진 돌 하나를 입 안으로 던져넣고 순식간에 삼켰습니다. “아아아” 호랑이는 고통으로 비명을 질렀습니다.

토끼는 길 아래에 숨어 있다가 호랑이가 강 쪽으로 달려가는 걸 봤습니다. 입에서 연기가 나오는 채로 뛰어가는 호랑이의 꼴이 너무나 우스꽝스러워 토끼는 바닥에 쓰러진 후 옆구리가 아프도록 웃고 또 웃었습니다.
