A $200 million film by actor-turned-director Berg seemed like a film full of toys, guns, naval ships, explosions and ultimately a typical portrayal of America’s military power. Now, let’s keep in mind that Berg isn’t so bad at turning mindless fun into box office success. So, yes, I bought it. Expecting to please myself with an action film that has no concerns for logic or nuance, I decided to return to adolescence and got prepped to be exhilarated by the expensive naval fleets and enemy alien forces being blown up on screen. After all folks, this film was inspired by a board game of the same name and sponsored by the game maker Hasbro.
It all begins in a similar fashion: There is a hero who is unemployed and seemingly good for nothing. One thing leads to another and he joins the navy. Meanwhile the guys at NASA discover a faraway solar system and an inhabitable planet. Being curious scientists, they send out signals in the hopes of receiving a friendly response. Instead of an answer, aliens decide to invade planet Earth.
The super creatures from outer space land during the world’s largest international maritime exercise, and the destiny of the human race falls upon the fellow who recently joined the navy. As you can see, it is quite pointless to dissect this movie. However, all of the poor elements of the film can be ignored in favor of the great entertainment value. Now, if you are a serious moviegoer, ignore the actors since they are not the main attraction of this film.
No matter how serious the actors get, the acting is simply comical across the board. Yes, there is the notable exception since the great Liam Neeson plays an admiral. Then again, Neeson has only limited screen time in the film. Throughout this nearly two-plus-hour affair, all the heroic emotions are least convincing. Don’t let my critique deter you from going to check out the mind blowing CGI effects. When comparing the costly special effects to the abysmal offerings in local films, it offers great bang for your buck. Sure the film is inconsistent. But, who am I to judge? It is a feel good movie and a clear indication of how a Hollywood blockbuster should be. Local ticket sales are enormous, and Berg has once again proven that there’s nothing wrong with mindless entertainment.
