It appears that people aren’t convinced that a serious king can enlighten viewers. Undermining the authority of the king are topics of romance and comedy, which guarantee good ratings. Perhaps it is our nation’s shift in social behavior that is strongly influencing the plot of various dramas. The general public is now less inclined to follow the typical dramas where only one king or an elite individual is depicted as a hero influencing the masses. A good example of this can be found in MBC’s recent drama The Moon Embracing the Sun. Thinking of his first love, the king lives a life of agony. And in the current hit series The King 2 Hearts, the prince is a spoiled brat who couldn’t care less about his royal responsibility.
No one would argue that the recent kings are very human-like and portrayed as characters that are not much different than everyday people. TV viewers and critics agree that the delightful ratings prove that the disappearance of political heroes is a reflection of the public’s political opinions. When winding the clock back, dramas in the past have shown kings restoring order in a turbulent time. In the late ‘90s, when the nation was faced with the Asian financial crisis, the public was searching for a strong leader who could to create economic stability. Two prominent shows from that time were Tears of a Dragon and Taejo Wanggeon.
Now there’s a new trend. People do not side with strong political heroes. No, the general public doesn’t believe that such figures can bring prosperity. It is highly possible that in the coming years, dramas will continue to depict historical figures under a humorous light. Contrasting their lives to the struggles of average citizens, kings are no longer high political figures, struggling and battling for power. Perhaps such change reflects the public’s desire to see political figures care more about the general livelihood of the people.
