The water picked up speed. It pulled the button down a metal grate into darkness. The shiny silver button fell farther and farther away from the sunlight. It landed with a splash into fast-moving water.
The water carried the little button further and further from its red sweater back at home.
After a while, a faraway light made the little button sparkle. The light got closer and closer until it was a big opening that showed the sky. The water sped up and fell over the side of some rocks into the sea.
The shiny button floated past curious fish. It got tangled up in seaweed.
After many weeks, the waves of the sea carried the shiny silver button up on shore. The sun shone on the button and made it sparkle in the sand. That is when the old man picked it up.
The old man cleaned the button and sewed it onto a handbag he was decorating with other buttons and shells he had found.
