The end of the 2000s saw Cameron doing it again with Avatar (2009). Cameron had worked on new inventions in film making technology during his time off between Titanic and Avatar, such as the digital 3D Fusion Camera System. This enabled the polymath filmmaker to once again blow audiences away with a gorgeous sci-fi epic, the likes of which the world had never seen.
His efforts paid off at the box office; combined Titanic and Avatar are the two highest-grossing films of all time, at $1.8 billion and $2.7 billion respectively. As well as all his technical and screen writing innovations this puts Cameron on the table as the second-highest grossing director of all time, just behind Steven Spielberg.
However, for every dollar made on Avatar there were more than a few lost. The sci-fi extravaganza was the most pirated film of 2010, being downloaded 16.6 million times on one file-sharing site alone, according to the file-sharing blog TorrentFreak. Incidentally, DiCaprio was also on the most downloaded list as Inception was grabbed illegally 9.7 million times.
Previously, Cameron had claimed 3D films to be the movie industry’s best hope for combating piracy, because to fully enjoy the experience you need to see these films in special 3D cinemas. However, while Avatar was the highest grossing film ever this didn’t stop millions from downloading it for free anyway. TorrentFreak said the figures were collected from numerous sources, including reports from thousands of BitTorrent tracker devices. These figures also accounted for all forms of piracy, including versions filmed with video cameras in cinemas.
The most downloaded movies are as follows :
1. Avatar - 16,580,000 downloads
2. Kick-Ass - 11,400,000 downloads
3. Inception - 9,720,000 downloads
