Call for UN Security Council Reform (유엔 안전보장이사회 개혁 요청)

Mr. Ban’s announcement with regards to the Security Council did not come as a complete surprise, as recently U.S. President Barack Obama announced he would back India’s bid for a permanent seat on the security council during a visit to the Indian nation. India’s inclusion on the Council would be one example of the changing landscape of international relations, where previously poor nations are being rebranded as emerging economies in the international arena. “The just and sustainable international order that the U.S. seeks includes a UN that is efficient, credible and legitimate. I look forward to a reformed UNSC that includes India as a permanent member,” President Obama told reporters.

Since the UNSC was formed over six decades ago it has been responsible for maintaining peace and stability and when necessary ordering military action. However over time the redistribution of power has been massive. With the recent rise of emerging Asian economies such as India and China a number of ‘middle tier’ economies have risen up behind them. This has led to major changes in world politics, with critics calling for a reform of the UNSC so it will better represent these emerging nations. Critics claim at present the council only serves the interests of its five current permanent members - the U.S., China, Russia, the U.K. and France.

Since Mr. Ban took over the top job at the UN he has striven to address humanitarian and climate issues. One of his key moves was to encourage developing economies to join the fight against climate change and to persuade the governments of rich nations to provide $30 billion annually to developing nations for advanced technology and a comprehensive environmental infrastructure to promote green growth. It seems that the UN has become all the more democratic and representative under Mr. Ban and hopefully the UNSC reform will be another step in this direction.
