Soaking up the beauty of Bukchon (북촌의 아름다움에 흠뻑 빠지다)

2010/10/20 09:17:26

It is named Bukchon because it lies north of the Han River.  It dates back to Joseon dynasty when the residents, who were mainly Yanban - powerful noble families and royal clan members - and artisans started to live there. Until recently, this area was preserved as a traditional village despite development around it. That’s why Bukchon appears as an attractive living place.

It is too big to understand completely in just one day,so our choice for locations include Gyedong-gil and 31 Gahoe-dong. Before exploring Bukchon, be prepared to negotiate a maze of alley ways: Gyedong-gil is the road located on the left side of the Hyundai building. If you step into Gyedong-gil, you will find many cultural spaces that seem like they existed in the 1970s. One of the examples is the Choi-pediatric hospital, a two story building made with red bricks. Walking along this street, the sign of the Joongang public bath will make you feel the nostalgia. At the end of this alley you will be faced with Joongang high school, founded in 1908, which is famous for being the shooting location of Winter Sonata.

Take a left in front of the Joongang High school and then you will enter the street leading to 31 Gahoe-dong. The area shows off a variety of stunning hanoks, while the alleys are somewhat like a spider web. While it might get visitors a bit confused forget about the seemingly complicated map and just let your heart guide you as you walk through the alleys.

One of the most fascinating charms of 31 Gahoe-dong is that you can feel the harmony of the modern and the traditional mixed in together. In the distant view lots of high rises form the backdrop of Seoul’s bustling and sprawling center, creating a fascinating view where modern and classical architecture can be seen in the same view.

If you want to look at more attractive landscapes in the area, the ‘Bukchon 8 Views’ will help you. All over the Bukchon, there are a total of eight spots where you can get the picturesque views. In 31 Gahoe-dong you are able to find four of the spots - numbers 4, 5, 6, 7? just like when you find hidden treasures.

Other than taking the route starting from Gyedong-gil to 31 Gahoe-dong, there is another option for soaking in the beauty of Bukchon; taking the route surrounding 11 Gahoe-dong is recommended. Compared to 31 Gahoe-dong, the 11 Gahoe-dong route is distinctive in that you can take a closer look at the interiors of the hanoks.
