In case you’ve managed to avoid the influence of Twitter since its launch in 2006 and its rise to global prominence, the site is a micro blogging platform. The idea is that users share very simple messages that are visible to everyone. These messages are known as ‘tweets’ and those who subscribe to a user’s tweets are known as ‘followers’. Twitter can be used via its website, smart phones or through SMS text messages, meaning that the service is accessible no matter where you are or what you’re doing.

While Twitter is used by many young people the site has also been popular with celebrities. Last year there was much discussion about whether professional basketball players in the U.S. should be allowed to send tweets during games. Team coaches complained that the players on the bench weren’t concentrating on the game.
