President Lee demanded that Japan and China, responsible members of the international community, must join South Korea to take proper procedures to find North Korea responsible for the alleged attack on the South Korean naval ship. Furthermore Lee added that the three nations must always discuss important issues and deal with sensitive issues to achieve peace. Prime Minister Hatoyama added extra weight by expressing Japan’s hopes to create a nuclear-free world.
The tripartite summit this year was overshadowed by the Cheonan incident. However all three leaders agreed to cement the trilateral partnership. On the brighter note the three nations will regard the European Union as a model to construct ways to boost regional cooperation among all NorthEast Asian nations.
By 2012 a free trade agreement may be proposed among the three countries. It is also very possible that a trilateral investment pact may be created in the close future. The three nations agreed to collaborate by urging small and big businesses to share technological standards and break down unnecessary barriers.
In closing the summit, South Korea and Japan once again stated tough penalties must be enforced against Pyongyang for its provocations. China remained silent.
