While holding their breath, people cheered and applauded when Kim made jumps that were spot on. Actually, Kim’s program wasn’t just about the well executed jumps. Her program was a complete routine of perfect spins, footwork and spirals. It was a package that no figure skater in the world performed before. Every Olympic commentator announced that Kim’s performance was the best ever Olympic performance in the event. After finishing her routine, Kim smiled and bowed at the screaming audience with teary eyes.

Her long program score? 150.56! Once again, she has broken her own scoring record. Asada Mao was up next. Even with the pressure on Japan’s superstar and Kim’s long rival made a mark of her own. She landed three triple Axels.

It was an incredible feat, becoming the first woman to land three triple Axels in the Olympics. Although she managed to impress the judges with the jumps, a few very minor errors in her routine prevented her from knocking off Kim from first place of the competition.

The figure skating drama wasn’t just about Kim and Mao. There was a heartbreaking and inspirational story. Canada’s own Joannie Rochette had lost her mother few days before the competition. Although devastated by the tragic event she wasn’t prepared for, she skated gracefully. With elegance she pulled off all the combinations and finished her routine to achieve 131.28 points.

Standing tall at the podium, Kim’s neck proudly showed off the gold medal. At the age of 19, she is the first female skater ever to achieve the sport’s gland-slam. She has won the World Gran Prix, Four Continents Championship, World Championship, and now an Olympic gold medal. Kim has emerged as the dominant figure in the sport, and it is very likely that she will reign for a long time.

Although she settled for the silver medal, Mao looked relieved that the competition with Kim is over for now. Rochette broke down in tears, knowing that her mother was watching from the heavens as she was awarded the bronze medal. Congratulations to all!
