안녕하세요, 오늘은 미국 고등학교의 클럽활동에 대해 말해 보려 합니다. 미국 고등학교의 클럽은 각기 다른 목적을 가지고 다양한 활동을 함은 물론 학생들 스스로 운영되는 경우가 대부분입니다. 이 클럽들은 세 가지 종류로 나눌 수 있는데 다문화 클럽, 교외활동 클럽, 봉사클럽으로 나눌 수 있습니다.

다문화 클럽은 다민족 국가인 미국에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 것으로 아들의 학교를 예로 들면, 필리핀 학생들의 모임인 Pinoy club, 아프리칸 학생들의 모임인 BSA, 인디언 부족 출신  Native American학생들의 모임인 NASU등이 있습니다. 물론 한국, 중국, 일본 학생들의 모임도 따로 있습니다. 이 모임들은  ‘다문화의 날’과 같은 각 나라의 문화를 소개하는 행사가 있을 때마다 활동하며 각자의 나라에서 어려운 일이 생길 때는 모금활동을 개최해 기부하기도 합니다. 필리핀 학생회의 경우 지난 번 태풍이 일어났을 때 천불 넘는 돈을 모으기도 했답니다.

교외활동 클럽으로는 주로 관심사가 같은 분야의 학생들이 모이는데 북클럽 , 매스클럽, 디베이트 클럽, 로보틱스 클럽, 모의법정 클럽 등이 아시안 학생들에게 인기가 많습니다. 왜냐하면 학업과 관련이 많기도 하고 각종 대회가 있어 고등학교 4년 동안의 이력을 쌓는데도 도움이 되기 때문입니다. 이 중 한 클럽이 내셔널 수준의 대회에서 입상이라도 하게 되면 그 클럽의 인기가 치솟아 다음 해에는 학생들이 몰리는 일도 종종 생깁니다.

봉사클럽은 가장 어렵기도 하고 유지하기도 쉽지 않은 클럽활동입니다. 진지하게 하려 들면 시간과 노력이 다른 두 클럽보다 훨씬 더 많이 소요되기 때문입니다. 또한 봉사클럽의 특징은 학년 초에는 많은 학생들이 몰려오지만 학년을 마칠 때쯤에는 남은 학생들의 수가 많지 않다는 겁니다 대부분의 대학들이 커뮤니티 서비스를 높게 봐주는 이유도 ‘ 이 학생이 이 사회를 위해서 이 정도 기여를 할 수 있구나’라는 생각을 하기 때문이랍니다.  대표적인 것으로는 Key club을 들 수 있는데 미국뿐만 아니라 한국, 영국 등 세계 여러 나라에 있는 클럽입니다. 이외에 개인적으로 도서관, 미술관, 박물관 등에서 정기적으로 봉사활동을 하기도 합니다. 아들의 경우는 Key club활동으로 각종 마라톤대회에서 등록을 도와주는 일부터 선수들에게 물을 나눠주고 함께 뛰면서 주변정리를 했던 일이 가장 기억난답니다.

이처럼 각종 클럽에 가입하고 활동하는 이유는 뭘까요. 아마도 본인에게 가장 의미 있는 일을 찾아 행동으로 옮겨보고, 그 과정에서 겪는 시행착오만큼 스스로 성장해서 일겁니다. 또한 잘 할 수 있는 게 무엇인지 찾아 미래를 계획하는 과정이라 생각해서 일겁니다. 여러분의 자녀는 어떤 클럽활동을 하고 있나요? 함께 참여해 보는 길이 있는지 이야기 해봐도 좋을 것 같습니다.

U.S. high schools, there are over hundred kinds of clubs. Each club has the purpose of its establishment, goals, and unique meeting agendas. The club is completely regulated by the students. In the following essay, three different types of clubs are explained: cultural clubs, extracurricular clubs, and service clubs.

The most stable clubs in all high schools are perhaps the cultural clubs, in which a specific culture or religion is represented. Common cultural clubs are Pinoy club (club for Filipinos), BSA (Black Student Alliance), and NASU (Native American Student Union). Cultural clubs typically participate in multicultural events that school hosts, such as Holidays Around the World and Multicultural Day. Also, cultural clubs arrange their own events to support their own races and religions in the United States or their home countries. Last year, the Pinoy club at my high school sold Filipino food afterschool for a week to fundraise money for the donation toward those who lost their shelter due to Typhoon Haiyan, and they successfully donated over $1,000 to the service organization in Philippine. These clubs always have consistent number of members because the new class has people that replace those who graduate.

Extracurricular clubs are clubs for those who share the same interest. Club members discuss the common interest and participate in events that are related to it. For instance, all the bibliophiles in my high school are part of the book club, in which the members discuss one book monthly and attend local or state book fairs. Some dominant extracurricular clubs in U.S. high schools are math club, debate club, robotics club, and mock trial club. The reason that these clubs are famous is that these clubs significantly represent the academic performance. Whenever these clubs participate in competitions, they represent the school simultaneously. Such facts captivate handful of students who would like to be academically successful. As opposed to cultural club, the number of club members in extracurricular clubs varies significantly every year. Students tend to join clubs that are successful in competitions or conventions; those that aren’t tend to have low number of members. So unless the club consistently wins in competitions, extracurricular clubs don’t always have consistent number of members.

Service clubs are clubs that participate in community service programs. Service club presidents search events that high school students could participate in. Some service clubs are sponsored by the service organization operated by adults. Key club is one such example. Key club is probably one of the largest service clubs managed by high school students (perhaps due to its long history). Its size is so huge that it is available in not only United States but also South Korea and England and other 28 countries. There are other service clubs that are purely student-managed, such as anti-bullying club and book buddies (club created to support those who are struggling with reading disabilities). Service clubs have the most amount of workload out of three types of clubs, so the majority of the new club members quit during the school year because they couldn’t handle the workload from service club with school work. So though the service clubs start out with large number of students, the number eventually decreases throughout the year.
