You probably won’t believe this! There is something really special about Lake Retba in Senegal. To say it simply, it is pink. If you look at the lake, it looks similar to a giant strawberry milkshake spill.

For some people, the lake seems even scary and unsafe. But don’t worry. The unusual color is not the result of chemicals being poured in the lake. Lake Retba is in fact a wonder of nature.

The bizarre color is caused by micro-algae called Dunaliella Salina in the highly-salty lake. In fact, the salinity of the lake is high enough for swimmers to float on the water easily, much like the Dead Sea.
 
Michael Danson, an expert in bacteria from Bath University, explains that Dunaliella Salina in the water produces a red pigment that absorbs and uses the energy of sunlight to create more energy, thus turning the water pink.

By the way, it is better to catch the amazing pink lake during the dry summer months when the saline levels are the highest.

마이클 댄스 바스 대학교 생화학과 교수는 물 속의 두날리엘라 살리나가 더 많은 에너지를 내기 위해 햇빛의 에너지를 흡수하고 이용하는 붉은 색소를 만드는데 이 과정에서 핑크색으로 호수가 바뀌는 것이라고 설명했다.

한편, 이 놀라운 핑크 호수는 염도가 가장 높은 여름철에 보는 게 더 좋다고 한다.
